Five Crewe eateries have been given a one-star food hygiene rating in 2022 - following an update from the Food Standards Agency.

The Food Standard Agency (FSA) Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, is aimed at helping people choose where to eat out or shop for food.

The FSA scheme is in partnership with local authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

It gives businesses a rating from 0 to 5 - displayed at their premises and online.

A one-star hygiene rating means that 'major improvement is necessary.' (FSA).

A one-star hygiene rating means that 'major improvement is necessary'' for a takeaway, pub, restaurant or shop.

Crewe Nub News has put together the list of of takeaways in Crewe which have been given a food hygiene rating of one-star or less - so far this year (A to Z)

All information was taken from the Food Standard Agency website as of June 6:

  • Golden Gate, Broad Street - (March 24 2022).

  • Great Wall, Edleston Road - (February 9 2022).

  • Happy Garden, Earle Street - (March 16 2022).

  • Indian Grill, Nantwich Road - (April 6 2022).

  • Pepper Jack's, Nantwich Road - (April 6 2022).

A food safety officer from Cheshire East Council inspected the Crewe businesses to check that they were following food hygiene law so that the food was safe to eat.

At all inspections, the officer checked the following three elements: 

  • how hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored
  • the physical condition of the business –including cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation, pest control and other facilities
  • how the business manages ways of keeping food safe, looking at processes, training and systems to ensure good hygiene is maintained. The officer can then assess the level of confidence in standards being maintained in the future.

The five Crewe businesses listed were rated one-star based on all these checks.

Ratings are an indicator of an eateries food hygiene standards - found at the time of inspection.
