Drive-thru plan for Weston Christmas lights display that raises thousands for hospice
THE organiser of the Christmas Light Display in Weston says the show will go on this year as a drive-thru event
With social distancing measures restricting gatherings the display, which last year was seen by more than 20,000 people, has been cancelled in its usual format.
But event founder Graham Witter is presenting the Weston Christmas Light Display 'Starlit Garden' in its place right through December (1-28) at Carters Green Farm in Jack Lane.
Graham said: "It's been a pretty tough year for everyone, so we wanted to be able to still bring happiness, love, and cheer to our community this Christmas. But with social distance measures in place we've had to think really carefully about the best way to keep our visitors safe.
"By holding a drive-thru event it means that people can still enjoy the lights and decorations, but from the safety of their own car.
"There will still be all the things that people love about the display and Santa will still be here, but this year he'll be doing a special wave ever Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening."
A new feature of the event is #NameAStar which gives people the opportunity to remember a loved one or celebrate a local hero this Christmas.
A 20ft tree is to be surrounded by 150 hand-made, metal stars each containing the name of someone special.
Graham has organised the display in memory of his sister, Jessica, who had a great fascination for colour, light and sound and received respite care at The Donna Louise Hospice.
Over the last seven years Graham has raised £124,850 for families who rely on The Donna Louise for a range of care, support and respite services.
Simon Fuller, Chief Executive of The Donna Louise Hospice, said: "Graham's support for the Hospice is truly outstanding. This has been a really tough year for everyone and it would have been understandable for Graham to cancel the event completely.
"But his commitment to putting on a magical event which everyone can enjoy, in a safe way, while raising money for a cause so close to his heart, is inspiring."
