Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service responded to a disposable barbecue fire in Crewe over the weekend - which even spread to a fence.

The incident was reported yesterday (July 10), at 4pm.

A disposable barbecue had been put in a bin on St Andrews Avenue, Crewe - close to Nantwich Road.

One fire engine from Crewe attended the scene and put out the fire that had spread from the bin to a nearby fence.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "A discarded disposable barbecue in a wheelie bin caused a fire which spread to a fence.

"A hose reel jet was used by firefighters to put out the fire. Please follow our barbecue safety advice.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service has outlined safety tips to prevent injuries and damage from barbecues:

  • Never leave a barbecue unattended.
  • Ensure the barbecue is on a flat site, well away from a shed, trees or shrubs.
  • Keep children, garden games and pets well away from the cooking area.
  • Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby for emergencies.
  • Ensure the barbecue is cool before attempting to move it.

For disposable barbecues, like the ones that caused the fire in Crewe, the fire service said:

  • It must be placed on an even surface on either bricks or paving slabs.
  • Place disposable barbecues well away from the house, shed or fences.
  • Do not use disposable barbecues near or on public benches.
  • If you're using a disposable barbecue ensure it has cooled before putting it in the bin. To avoid starting a fire you should allow it to cool for several hours and then consider pouring water over it to make sure it's out.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service say that despite this information being common sense, barbecues can cause danger like the incident in Crewe this weekend.
