A Crewe volunteer group has criticised the upkeep of the new Southern Gateway, claiming overflowing bins, litter and unwatered trees are detracting from one of the town's 'flagship' public realm projects.

Crewe Clean Team raised the concerns after another litter pick at the route linking Crewe Lifestyle Centre with High Street.

Opened in November 2025, the scheme provides the main walking and cycling route into the town centre, connecting up with the new Mill Street Corridor project.

Crewe Clean Team said: "The Southern Gateway might be considered a 'flagship' project as it provides the walking/cycling entrance to Crewe town centre for visitors arriving by rail.

"The cost was in the region of £3m. Our members have already litter picked here several times and, again, the bins are full and there is litter strewn across the beds and in and alongside the meadow, which is still looking beautiful and attracting lots of insects.

"None of the trees has been watered recently, all the bags are empty.

"It is almost as if the extra maintenance required for more bins and vegetation is not taken into account when a project is being considered and costed."

The Southern Gateway Link included new street lighting, trees, shrubs, and a rain garden, as well as improved signage.

Funded by the Government's Future High Streets Fund programme, the project has been mainly praised for improving the look of the area.

Crewe Nub News has contacted Cheshire East Council for comment.
