Crewe 'well-rewarded' as huge Knife Angel sculpture launches in town centre

By Ryan Parker 4th May 2023

Crewe has been 'well-rewarded' by a huge Knife Angel sculpture visiting the town this May - aiming to 'get debate and discussion going' about knife crime.

Created from 100,000 seized blades, The Knife Angel is located in Memorial Square from Wednesday 3 May until Wednesday 31 May.

Crewe is the 35th venue to host The Knife Angel and currently the only town in Cheshire planned to host it.

An opening ceremony for the British Ironworks Centre sculpture was held in Memorial Square at 4:30pm on Wednesaday 3 May - led by the Revd Dr Oliver Igwe (Ryan Parker).

This ceremony was joined by by director of British Ironworks Centre, Clive Knowles, the high sheriff of Cheshire, Dennis Dunn and Crewe and Nantwich MP, Dr Kieran Mullan.

Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire Constabulary, John Dwyer was also in attendance at the event.

He told Nub News: "The Knife Angel is a lovely visual centre-piece - causing discussions on knife crime to take place.

"It is there to get debate and discussion going - that ultimately we can reduce knife crime.

Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire Constabulary, John Dwyer was in attendance at the event - speaking to Nub News (Ryan Parker).

"Crewe Municipal Square is certainly the right place for The Knife Angel to be - this is a place where most of the public will cross.

"If people don't know what The Knife Angel is about, they will start asking questions and that will then start a discussion across.

"Crewe is the only town on the list of venues The Knife Angel will visit at the moment.

"It has only been to cities so far, so Crewe has been well-rewarded for having The Knife Angel in the community today."

The Knife Angel sculpture is multi-purpose, helping to educate communities about the negative impacts of knife crime.

It aims to act as a poignant memorial to those who have lost their lives to knife crime.

Funding for the project has been given by Crewe Town Council and the Safer Cheshire East Partnership - supported through funding from the Police Crime Commissioner's Office.

During The Knife Angel's visit to Crewe, young people will be encouraged to sign up as Anti-Violence Ambassadors.

PCC John Dwyer said: "The chief constable [Mark Roberts], has been taking all sorts of precautions and initiatives to reduce knife crime in Crewe.

"One stabbing is one stabbing too many. It is a traumatic experience for the families involved.

"Some people seem to think life is cheap, for me it is extremely valuable - we need to do everything we can to protect our people.

"My message to knife carriers is clear. Don't do it. The carrying of a knife for protection is a farce. It is false. All it will do is result in stabbings.

"Anyone who visits The Knife Angel, I want them walking away from it thinking Crewe has done something great, and get involved with discussions on the issue. "

The 100,000 seized blades of The Knife Angel have been collected by 43 police constabularies in the UK.
