A Crewe Halal shop and a town centre pub have been hit with a one-star food hygiene rating for this year - with inspections taking place in the summer.

The Food Standard Agency (FSA) Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, is aimed at helping people choose where to eat out or shop for food.

The FSA scheme is in partnership with local authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

A one-star hygiene rating means 'major improvement is necessary' for the business (FSA).

It gives businesses a rating from 0 to 5 - displayed at their premises and online.

A one-star hygiene rating means 'major improvement is necessary' for the business, slightly up on a zero-star hygiene rating, which is more critical saying - 'urgent improvement is required.'

In August, Crewe Nub News, put together a new list of Crewe businesses which have been given a food hygiene rating of one-star or less this year.

Now, we take into consideration shops that have been given a low hygiene rating this summer - with a new pub and shop included.

All information was taken from the Food Standard Agency website as of October 18:

  • Cheshire Halal Meat Centre Limited, High Street - One - (August 10 2022).

Cheshire Halal Meat Centre Limited, High Street, was handed a one-star hygiene rating in August (Google).

  • Albert's Corner, Prince Albert Street - One (July 20 2022).

Albert's Corner, Prince Albert Street, was handed a one-star hygiene rating in July (Crewe Nub News).

A food safety officer from Cheshire East Council inspected the Crewe businesses to check that they were following food hygiene law so that the food was safe to eat.

At all inspections, the officer checked the following three elements:

  • how hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored
  • the physical condition of the business –including cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation, pest control and other facilities
  • how the business manages ways of keeping food safe, looking at processes, training and systems to ensure good hygiene is maintained. The officer can then assess the level of confidence in standards being maintained in the future.

The two listed Crewe businesses were rated one-star based on all these checks.
