A CREWE school has applied for permission to build an extension because 60 per cent of its general teaching classrooms are undersized and unsuitable for a full class of 30 students.

Ruskin Community High School wants to extend the existing detached classroom block to provide four additional classrooms.

According to Department for Education guidance, the school requires 18 general teaching classrooms, each of 55sqm for 30 students.

A planning document submitted to the council states it does have 18 teaching classrooms.

Thirteen of these are in the original listed building, one is in a temporary portable building and four in a detached classroom block.

"Only seven of these general teaching classrooms meet the required space standard of 55m2," states the document.

"Within the main school building, 11 of the classrooms are undersized. These rooms are only considered suitable for 24 students."

According to the report, the school requires a minimum of 10 general teaching classrooms of 55sqm or larger and that can be achieved through a four classroom extension without altering the existing spaces within the listed building.

The three smallest existing classrooms would then be used to address a lack of seminar and group room accommodation.

It adds: "The only potential location for this extension was identified as adjacent to the detached four classroom block. A number of options were assessed including single and two storey structures with the preferred option being a single storey four classroom extension linked to the existing building."

The school's planning application can be viewed here.

The closing date for comments is May 4.
