Crewe has been ranked mid-tier in a report of the best and worst places to live in England and Wales this year.

Property finder company Garrington has published its 2024 marketing report for England and Wales.

The report ranks the 1,429 towns, cities and villages on measures covering five categories.

Of all the categories, Crewe ranks highest for its house price quality and value, sitting at 313 (Ryan Parker).

These categories are natural environment, wellbeing, heritage/culture, schools, employment and connectivity and house price quality and value.

Garrington also lists the average family home cost and average sales price change across the last 12 months in each settlement.

Out of the 1,429 places, Crewe has been ranked 772 overall.

Wellbeing in Crewe is ranked at 771, with heritage/culture sitting at 692 (Ryan Parker).

Of all the categories, Crewe ranks highest for its house price quality and value, sitting at 313.

The town fares worst for its natural environment, ranking at 966.

Wellbeing is ranked at 771, heritage/culture sits at 692 and schools, employment and connectivity surprisingly ranks at 926.

According to Garrington, the average family home cost in Crewe is £280,243, with an average sales price fall of 3.5 per cent in the last year.

  • Winsford is ranked among the country's worst places to live, sitting at 1,363 out of 1,429
  • Runcorn is also ranked low down the list, sitting at 1286 with wellbeing its worst rating
  • Middlewich sits at 1,218, with only its house price quality and value faring well
  • Cuddington is ranked at 1,159, with its natural environment rated poorly.
  • Davenham is placed at 1,174, ranked worst for its schools, employment and connectivity
  • Holmes Chapel fares poorly with a rating of 1,161, ranking low for heritage/culture and schools, employment and connectivity
  • Hartford is placed at 1,063, also ranking poorly for schools, employment and connectivity

  • Sandbach is ranked at 972, rated down in 1304 for schools, employment and connectivity
  • Weaverham is placed at 953, with heritage/culture and schools, employment and connectivity ranking poorly

  • Macclesfield is ranked among the country's best places to live, sitting at 42 out of 1,429
  • Wilmslow is also ranked very highly, sitting just four places behind Macclesfield at 46
  • Lymm sits within the top 100 at 83, with schools, employment and connectivity its strong point
  • Bollington is placed at 142, with house price quality and value ranked eighth for the whole of England and Wales
  • Poynton sits in a solid position at 192, best ranked for its natural environment
  • Chester ranks at 203, with heritage/culture its strong point
  • Knutsford is placed at 249, faring well for its house price quality and value
  • Warrington is ranked at 342, best rated for its schools, employment and connectivity
  • Alsager sits at a respectable 528, ranked best for its house price quality and value
  • Congleton is placed at 578, also ranked highest for its house price quality and value
  • Nantwich is placed at 583 on the list, with wellbeing and house price quality and value its highest ranked statistics
  • Ellesmere Port sits at 662, with schools, employment and connectivity its strong point
  • Barnton is ranked just above Crewe at 724, placing best for its wellbeing

Crewe ranking for schools, employment and connectivity surprisingly sits at 926 out of 1,429 (Ryan Parker).

Elsewhere, nearby Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme sit at 396 and 391 respectively, with Shropshire's Whitchurch ranked 1036.

The North Wales seaside town of Rhyl sits at a lowly 1351, with Liverpool ranked 347 and Manchester 135.
