Crewe and Nantwich MP Dr Kieran Mullan has attacked Russia's unprovoked assault on Ukraine, labelling the Russian leader as a "violent and uncompromising dictator."

Five days into the invasion and despite strong Ukrainian resistance, Russia have continued to cause death and destruction to the country, sparking fears of further conflict across Europe.

Mullan, 37, concerned with the situation stated: "I know things happening in other countries don't always seem like things we should care about. I think we should all be very concerned about Putin's disgraceful invasion of Ukraine. He is invading them because he resents any free and democratic country."

The MP got the chance to speak to Ukrainians when they gathered to protest at Parliament. He said: "They are proud of their fellow citizens fighting back, obviously very sad and also grateful for the support the UK has given. I joined a virtual call with Ukrainian MPs and will be doing what I can to support them in their requests for help."

When speaking about what the UK has planned in response to Russia's invasion, Mullan added: "We have announced tough sanctions. They may well cause problems for us, they may put sanctions on us in return. If you find yourself asking why we should be in difficulty to help Ukraine, I would just ask you to think about all the times before the UK has stood up to dictators bent on destruction. Not only is it the right thing to do, in the long run it is in our interests.

"I hope Putin doesn't go even further but if necessary we should use force to make good on the NATO alliance if he does. Things may get worse before they get better. We may have to make even more sacrifices to stop him."

Former Mayor for the Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council, Brian Silvester said that he was "fully opposed" to the Russian invasion. The 70-year-old disagreed with Mullan's view on force, stating: "No British troops should be involved and put at risk."

Instead the Woolstanwood Parish Councillor believed that current sanctions on Russia should be "greatly cranked up." Silvester was of the opinion that British troops should remain in the UK, protecting UK borders from illegal immigration.

He stated: "I feel sorry for the Ukrainian people who are caught up in a power play between East and West. We should offer compassinate aid to the Ukrainian people and use diplomatic efforts to bring the hostilities to an end as soon as possible."

Laura Smith who served as the Labour MP for Crewe and Nantwich between 2017 and 2019 stated: "My solidarity is with the people of Ukraine and all of those who are working hard and making a stand for a peaceful solution. It breaks my heart the suffering that people are facing, and we have to do everything that we can to support the refugees who will be fleeing for safety. I already note that locally people are fundraising and donating to support.

"Putin's invasion of Ukraine will lead only to misery and death and it must withdraw its troops. This war is a disaster for the people of Ukraine and is a threat to all of us. I stand with those brave anti-war protestors in Russia calling for peace."

The Cheshire East Councillor who has been battling COVID-19 added: "I will continue to campaign for peace in whatever way that I can as part of the international anti-war movement. The besieged people of Ukraine and the brave protesters in Russia deserve nothing less."
