A 69-year-old retired gas worker from Crewe has been awarded £11,500 by his former dentists with the help of specialist dental negligence solicitors the Dental Law Partnership.

The payment was awarded to Mr Roger Taylor after multiple dental errors, including gum disease being left untreated as well as decay being left to progress, led to severe bone loss and the loss of multiple teeth, all of which could have been avoided.

Mr Taylor was a long term patient at Monkmoor Dental Practice, Shrewsbury, since 1971.

The payment was awarded to Mr Roger Taylor after multiple dental errors, including gum disease being left untreated as well as decay being left to progress, led to severe bone loss and the loss of multiple teeth, all of which could have been avoided (Roger Taylor).

Between 1986 and 2013, he was primarily treated by Dr Robin Pope and then treated by Dr Davinder Jakhu between 2014 and 2019.

Mr Taylor said: "I attended regular appointments at Monkmoor for decades, and over the years had multiple treatments including fillings and crowns.

"I felt I got on well with the dentists there. After the Covid pandemic, I visited a new dentist and was extremely shocked to hear I was suffering from severe bone loss and would need to be referred to hospital as I required extractions and multiple remedial treatments.

"I was stunned. Neither Dr Pope nor Dr Jakhu had ever mentioned anything to do with gum disease to me in all my years of appointments. It took a while to take in the situation.

"As a result of the extreme bone loss, in November 2021 I attended a number of hospital appointments where I was advised I was suffering from a large cyst.

"I also had to undergo a number of tooth extractions under general anaesthetic.

"I then had to see another specialist dentist who diagnosed me with chronic gum disease and has supported me through remedial treatment."

Concerned with the experiences he had gone through, Mr Taylor contacted the Dental Law Partnership in 2022.

Analysis of his records revealed errors that had affected a significant number of Mr Taylor's teeth, and the significant bone loss across his jaw, all of which could have been treated at a much earlier stage and ultimately avoided.

Mr Taylor said: "I am looking into cosmetic treatment at the moment, as I have a number of gaps in my teeth and it makes it a lot harder to chew. But it would cost thousands of pounds.

"I struggle to chew and I don't like to smile much anymore either, on one side of my mouth I only have three teeth left in my upper jaw."

"I have lost a lot of faith in dentistry. This isn't a problem that happens overnight - my issues had been building for quite a few years and were never picked up on at my regular practice."

The Dental Law Partnership took on Mr Taylor's case in 2022. The case was successfully settled in May 2024 when Mr Taylor was paid £11,500 in an out of court settlement.

The dentists involved did not admit liability.

Nicholas Hampson of the Dental Law Partnership, told Nub News: "The significant distress, pain and inconvenience our client has experienced was completely unnecessary.

"If the dentists involved had provided more satisfactory treatment, his problems could have been avoided."
