Crewe has been given a significant geographical title, the place where the North begins.

Travel journalist, Simon Calder, has weighed into the long-running debate over where the North-South divide starts, and his proposed boundary puts Crewe firmly on the northern side.

Calder has backed the 53rd parallel, a line of latitude stretching from Crewe across England to Skegness on the Lincolnshire coast.

In 'The Travel Expert' podcast for The Telegraph, Calder said: "My nomination is the 53rd parallel: stretching across from Crewe to Skegness, but crucially underlining the start of highland England at Dovedale in the Peak District National Park."

The proposal follows a suggestion from journalist Chris Moss, who also identified a line broadly running from Crewe to Skegness as a possible North-South boundary.

There is, of course, no official dividing line, with geography, culture, accents and local identity all playing a part in the debate.

But Calder's verdict gives Crewe a new claim to fame, as the western starting point of his proposed boundary for northern England.

So, where does the North begin? According to Calder, it begins in Crewe.
