A SUNFLOWER attraction on the outskirts of Crewe has extended its opening so visitors can flock in over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Alex and Simon Lewis planted 150,000 sunflowers on their farm, Park Farm, in Crewe Green to mark their 10th wedding anniversary and the 100th year the Lewis family has been tenants on the Duchy of Lancaster-owned farm.

The sunflower trail, which is raising money for Leighton NICU and the Friends of Haslington School, was due to close, but the family has decided to continue it over the holiday period.

The attraction has been so popular that the Lewis family are set to repeat it next year and even make it an annual event.

Scores of visitors from as far away as London and Bolton have taken a trip around the sunflowers, which stand in over a hectare of land.

Alex said: "We just wanted people to have a good time and enjoy themselves. Everyone has missed out during the lockdowns.

"Sunflowers are a lot of people's favourite flowers. They evoke sun and happy times.

"We also saw it as an opportunity to fundraise and donate to two charities."

Both of the Lewis's two children spent time in NICU. Their son Dexter was born full term and needed antibiotics and a week in an incubator and while daughter Penny was born premature at 29 weeks and was in the NICU for 52 days.

The sunflowers have been planted around the perimeter of a maize field – all of which will be harvested in the autumn ready to be used as livestock feed.

The adventure trail takes visitors on a route around 1km long. A path allows visitors to immerse themselves in the field in a way they wouldn't normally experience along with information sheets.

The trail costs £10 per car (which includes a bunch of sunflowers to pick to take home – 8 stems). Further bunches are priced at £5 each and visitors should bring their own secateurs.

The trail is open 10 am – 5 pm today (Friday), Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday. The postcode is CW1 5UP.
