A 'loss-making' Crewe convenience store with post office is set to close down - following a decision made by a supermarket chain.

Yesterday (November 1), Morrisons announced McColl's convenience store with post office, Coleridge Way, will be permanently closing.

This decision was made on a total of 132 McColl's convenience stores - with no realistic prospect of making a profit in the medium term.

The McColl's Coleridge Way store will be closing down next year (Ryan Parker).

The company said that it would delay the closure of McColl's 55 stores that house Post Office counters until next year - including Coleridge Way.

Morrisons supermarket bought the McColl's chain out of administration back on May 9.

The deal was not officially cleared by the competition regulator until last month (October).

McColl's currently operates 1,164 shops across England Scotland and Wales.

There are still seven stores in Crewe, including: Nantwich Road, West Street, Badger Avenue, Gainsborough Road, Ridgway Street and Hungerford Road.

The 132 stores announced for closure leaves 1,300 jobs at risk - including Coleridge Way, Crewe.

Morrisons' convenience, online and wholesale director, Joseph Sutton, said: "We very much regret the proposed closure of 132 loss-making stores but it is, very sadly, an important step towards the regeneration of the business.

"We have a great deal of work to do but there's no question that McColl's is a business with strong potential."

Morrisons has said all affected staff members would be offered alternative employment at a nearby McColl's or Morrisons store.

They would also have the option of one of its logistics operations or food making centres.
