Crewe car park now closed in wait of drive-thru restaurant

A car park in Crewe has been closed off to the public - with the construction of a new Burger King drive-thru restaurant nearing.

A Burger King was approved for the edge of the town centre on the Market Shopping Centre car park in March 2021 - by Cheshire East Planning.

It will be located on the smaller of the two Market Centre car parks - located on the corner of West Street and Vernon Way.

Since, the original May 2020 planning application, the proposed site layout has been updated to locate the restaurant in the south east corner of the site.

The outer façade has also been changed from a striped 'mushroom' colour with wood effect panelling to brick walls and black cladding.

Last month, a discharge of conditions was submitted to Cheshire East Planning by Intervention Architecture.

Following an in-depth study of the ground below the car park, there is a small contamination of asbestos.

It has been concluded that this may pose a risk to site workers during construction and maintenance.

The minimum requirement currently is that the appointed groundworks contractor should carry out a watching brief during any excavations.

This site has gone through multiple stages of development in the past including: a fire station, terraced housing, a sawmill and a corporation yard (until the 1980s). It was then cleared and developed into a car park.

The single-storey building will have spaces for 68 customers and will include an outdoor seating area.

Burger King's car park will also be equipped with charging points for electric vehicles.

In November 2021, Nub News was informed by Crewe Market Shopping Centre that 'discussions are still ongoing' for the development.

This month, a Market Shopping Centre spokesperson told Nub News: "We suggest that you keep an eye on our website and social media channels where (Burger King) updates will be announced."
