Crewe Alexandra beat a Premier League Under-21 side in what the manager described as - the 'worst penalty shootout' he'd ever seen.

The Railwaymen drew 0-0 with Leeds United Under-21s last night (November 1) - winning the Papa John's trophy match 2-1 on penalties.

Leeds fielded a side with seasoned Premier League players - including Mateusz Kilch and Junior Firpo.

Crewe handed out debuts to 18-year-old Owen Lunt and Slovakia under-17 international Matus Holicek (Kevin Warburton).

The Alex managed just two shots on goal compared to Leeds' 16 - but held out in normal time.

There were seven penalties missed in the penalty shootout - with Tariq Uwakwe, Charlie Finney and Bassala Sambou missing for Crewe.

Successful spot-kicks from Dan Ayyei and Regan Griffiths was enough for the Railwaymen to claim their only two points in the competition.

Dan Agyei and Regan Griffiths scored two of Crewe's five penalties (Kevin Warburton).

Crewe Alexandra manager, Alex Morris, gave his opinion on the shocking shootout.

He told Crewe Alexandra's website: "The boys were rewarded by winning the tie on penalties – even though it might have been the worst shootout I've ever seen.

"I've never seen so many miss the target before.

"Dave (Richards) has an excellent record of saving them, and he stopped the ones he had too.

"I am pleased the players got their reward for their effort and endeavour."

Crewe Alexandra manager, Aex Morris, admitted it was the worst penalty shootout he's ever seen (Kevin Warburton).

The Alex dug-in deep to hold out in normal time and were rewarded in the end.

Junior Firpo, Mateo Fernandez, Sonny Perkins and Darko Gyabi all missed their penalties for Leeds.

Morris added: "Usually these games are for an U21s side to gain positive experience of playing against senior pros, but this was the other way around.

"We had a really young team, a couple made their debuts, and they put out the strongest U21s team I've ever seen fielded in this competition.

Crewe Alexandra host League Two leaders Leyton Orient in an FA Cup first round clash this Saturday (November 5).

"It was full of players who have played at the top level and internationally, so the experience was there for us to have, and the outcome was positive."
