CREWE Alex paid tribute today (Saturday) to long-serving matchday announcer and stalwart fan Andy Scoffin who has passed away.

Andy had been battling cancer, but his illness failed to prevent him from taking to the PA room last season, where his eclectic choice of music always struck the right chord with fans whether the Alex won, drew or lost.

A minute's applause will take place before today's pre-season friendly with Wolves (K.O 3pm) and both sets of players will wear black armbands.

Two months ago Andy organised a supporters' match at the Mornflake Stadium to raise money for The Christie Hospital where he underwent treatment.

The club said on social media: "Everybody at Crewe Alexandra is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Andy Scoffin.

"Andy was more than simply the voice of our club. He was also the heartbeat and the soul, and loved and valued by everybody who knew him.

"Our thoughts are with his family & friends. RIP."
