Crewe Alexandra have continued their transfer business with the signing of an experienced defender, who featured in the club's latest pre-season fixture.

Mickey Demetriou completed his move to Crewe on Friday 21 July, signing on an initial one-year contract with the option of a further 12 months.

The 33-year-old centre-back joined The Alex after deciding to leave Newport County this summer.

Mickey Demetriou becomes Crewe's fifth signing of the summer, joining Harvey Davies, Ryan Cooney, Shilow Tracey and Jack Powell (Crewe Alex).

Demetriou enjoyed five-and-a-half seasons in South Wales, making 245 EFL appearances.

Over this period, the 6ft 3 defender netted 25 times for The Exiles, playing a crucial part in the club's 'great escape' from relegation in 2017-18.

Demetriou started his career in non-league, first appearing for Bognor Regis Town in 2009.

The Durrington-born defender then went on to feature for Eastbourne Borough and Kidderminster Harriers in the Conference Premier.

In 2014, Demetriou was snapped up by Shrewsbury Town, scoring three times in 42 League One appearances.

Demetriou [14], replaced Connor O'Riordan in the second half of Crewe's latest pre-season friendly, a 2-1 home defeat to Lincoln City (Ryan Parker).

The following season, the veteran was loaned out to Cambridge United in League Two.

Here, Demetriou caught the eye of Newport, going on to become one of the club's most highly-rated players.

This May, he was selected as the PFA Community Champion for the 2022-23 season in recognition of work with the local charity 'County in the Community'.

Demetriou replaced Connor O'Riordan in the second half of Crewe's latest pre-season friendly, a 2-1 home defeat to Lincoln City (July 22).

A club statement read: "Everybody at Crewe Alexandra would like to welcome Mickey to the club and wish him all the best for the coming campaign."

Crewe Alex's first-team squad will face League One side, Barnsley FC, in a pre-season away fixture on Saturday 29 July (Ryan Parker).
