Cheshire East seeks sponsors for new Crewe primary school opening in 2028

Cheshire East I sexpected to start looking for sponsors for a new Crewe primary school this September, after the process was put on hold when the developer went into administration.

The free school proposed for Basford East on the outskirts of Crewe was originally due to have opened in September 2025. but Lane End Developments Construction Ltd went into administration over two years ago.

A report due to go the children and families committee on September 15, says a new developer will now deliver the Basford phase one development, the site off David Whitby Way, which includes the proposed new school.

Councillors will be asked at the meeting to give officers the go-ahead to proceed with the free school presumption process to identify and obtain agreement for a new school sponsor.

This includes undertaking a consultation with the local community, local schools, local councillors, town council and local MP.

The report says: "The free school presumption had initially started in January 2022 and had progressed to draft specification stage, including consultation.

"Due to the length of time since the initial consultation and draft school specification documents, officers have been advised by the Department for Education to restart the process."

The new school will be a one-form entry primary school, with the option for a 30-place nursery. Its proposed opening date is now September 2028.

The children and families committee meeting takes place at 10.30am on Monday 15 September at Macclesfield Town Hall (Nub News).

The report adds: "The building will be designed to include the infrastructure and design considerations to increase up to two form of entry to allow for future expansion if the need arises as a result of additional housing in the local area."
