Cheshire East has given the go-ahead for council officers to find sponsors for a new Crewe primary school, which should be up and running by September 2028.

The free school proposed for Basford East on the outskirts of Crewe was originally due to have opened in September 2025, but Lane End Developments Construction Ltd went into administration more than two years ago.

A new developer will now deliver the Basford phase one development, the site off David Whitby Way which includes the proposed new school.

On Monday 15 September, the children and families committee voted unanimously to give officers the go-ahead to proceed with the free school presumption process to identify and obtain agreement for a new school sponsor.

The new Crewe school will be a one-form entry primary school, off David Whitby Way, with the option for a 30-place nursery (Paul Currie, via Cartwright Comms).

This includes undertaking a consultation with the local community, local schools, local councillors, town council and local MP.

An officer told the meeting: "Current forecasts are predicting that we're going to have a shortfall of places.

"Weston School is the only other school within two miles of the development but, following a site assessment, that site is not large enough to actually deliver the numbers that we will need.

"So, we are proposing to build this new school.

"The new school will initially be built as a one form of entry, but it will have the infrastructure for two FE (form entry) so things like the hall, the kitchen, staff room and so on, those will be built for two FE and all the sports facilities.

"The size of the site is such that it can take a two FE."

The officer said a 30-place nursery was also proposed. The committee vote was unanimous.
