Cheshire East has given the go-ahead for nine homes in the green gap at Shavington.

The new dwellings, applied for by John Mallam and his wife, will be built on a 0.6-hectare site adjacent to Alfred King Close.

The applicant's agent told Wednesday's (9 September) meeting of the southern planning committee: "The site is located to the rear of our clients' home and is made up of part of their rear garden, an extensive area of yard used for the clients' events business, plus a square-shaped area of enclosed grassland.

"The application submitted in March of this year originally proposed 23 dwellings, but this has been reduced to nine due in part to discussions with your officers, but mainly due to the yard and garden area being retained."

He said the homes could be delivered in a 'timely fashion', adding: "It would have been easy to make a case for larger houses on this site, but we have chosen to build two bungalows, two and three-bedroom mews houses, and a few small detached – a proposal that was welcomed by the parish council."

The committee was told by planning officer Daniel Evans that the physical gap between Crewe and Shavington would not be significantly changed by this development.

"We consider it to be effectively a small rounding off of this part of the settlement edge, wouldn't lead to coalescence, and on that basis, it's considered to be acceptable," he said.

Cllr Allen Gage (Willaston and Rope, Non-grouped) proposed approval, saying: "I'm quite happy with the application.

"I see it just as being a bit of a rounding-off and a little bit of leftover space in the cul-de-sac.

"I don't see there being any particular impact on the wider community, and I'm quite pleased as well to see the housing mix.

"Two bungalows amongst these potential nine dwellings is pleasing to see."

He added it was a sustainable location for anyone who didn't have transport.

Cllr Anna Burton (Nantwich, Labour), seconded the approval and the vote was unanimous.
