Traffic works of a busy junction around central Crewe have been completed - one week ahead of the council's schedule.

Works at the junction of Wistaston Road/Dunwoody Way and the Wistaston Road/Edleston Road/Oak Street crossroads commenced on April 4.

All works ended yesterday (May 9) - after some time was pulled back from the site workers.

Cheshire East Council had initially expected the junction closure and overall works in Crewe to last for six weeks.

The lane of Dunwoody Way towards the Phoenix Leisure Park was shut for the entirety of the works.

A Cheshire East Spokesperson told Nub News: "The closure was needed to prepare for the installation of state-of-the-art adaptive signal controls later in the year.

"This project is being funded as part of the council's £14.1m allocation of funding from the government's Future High Streets Fund."

The new traffic lights are expected to be installed by the end of this year.

These controls will be able to take traffic conditions into account and aim to to improve the town centre's accessibility.

Cheshire East believe the improvements will encourage people to stay for longer.

The works also supported the council's carbon agenda and sustainable and active travel programmes.

During the works, traffic signal poles were upgraded, along with the lamps, which will are now ultra-low voltage and more carbon efficient.

A 'touch free' crossing demand system has also been installed for pedestrians.
