Breaking: Boris Johnson to face confidence vote - but still no comment from Crewe MP Kieran Mullan
The Prime Minister will face a confidence vote in his leadership - but there is still no comment from Crewe and Nantwich MP Dr Kieran Mullan.
Boris Johnson will face a possible vote of confidence in his leadership as MPs return to Westminster today after the half-term break.
A ballot will be held between 6pm and 8pm this evening Monday (June 6), votes will be counted immediately afterwards.
An announcement on the outcome is expected approximately an hour after the vote closes.
This news come after the threshold of 15 per cent - at least 54 Conservative MPs - has been reached to trigger a vote of no confidence in the PM.
A number of Tory MPs requested that the news on the vote would be released after the Queen's Platinum Jubilee weekend.
This comes in wake of the Partygate scandal where Mr Johnson was issued a £50 fixed penalty notice by police in April for breaking COVID laws in June 2020.
In total, 126 fines to 83 people were issued to members of government.
If Mr Johnson was to survive the vote of confidence, there will be a period of a year before another ballot could be held.
The 58-year-old only needs to win the ballot by a single vote to remain in charge of the country - he was advised of the situation yesterday.
For the PM to be ousted, half of Tory MPs plus one would need to vote against him - 180 votes.
If Mr Johnson loses, a contest to choose a new party leader and prime minister will take place. The PM would be barred from standing.
In a statement a Downing Street spokesperson said: "Tonight is a chance to end months of speculation and allow the government to draw a line and move on, delivering on the people's priorities.
"The PM welcomes the opportunity to make his case to MPs and will remind them that when they're united and focused on the issues that matter to voters there is no more formidable political force."
The Prime Minister is set to make a plea to his MPs at 4pm, urging them to continue their support of him. A letter from Mr Johnson will also be sent out to MPs.
He said: "With your support, I believe that tonight we have a great prize within our grasp".
It is not known if Crewe and Nantwich MP Dr Kieran Mullan handed in a letter, nor requested that the news be withheld until this morning.
Crewe Nub News has contacted Dr Kieran Mullan MP and Crewe Conservative Constituency Association for comment.
