COMMUNITY groups have come together to spruce up Crewe's alleyways.

Crewe Alley Ways Project, a volunteer led event, supported by Radius Payment Solutions, was launched over the Bank Holiday weekend to tackle grot spots with some direct action.

Residents were joined on Walthall Street and Westminster Street by members of Crewe Clean Team, Crewe Residents Against Fly Tipping and visitors Anfield Alley Angels, as well as Crewe and Nantwich MP Kieran Mullan.

They unblocked two drains, cleared rubbish and removed weeds from to give the alleyways a new lease of life.

Now similar two-hour blitzes on rubbish and fly-tipping are planned again this Friday and Saturday

(June 4/5).

The MP said: "This is a cross party team working together to help residents. I know this is going to be long and arduous journey to get everyone on board and while this project brings the carrot Cheshire East Council has pledged to bring the stick of enforcement as well."

Cheshire East has linked up with Crewe Town Council in a summer pilot scheme to tackle poor waste management on 26 streets and their alleyways.

They are in the central area of town and include Walthall Street and Westminster Street.

Section 46 notices have been issued to all residents in the area spelling out penalties for waste offences.

Crewe Alleyways Project will be holding days of action again on Friday 5-7pm and Saturday 10am to midday. You can join in and help make a difference to the local community by meeting up with the volunteer gang at Stalbridge Road alley gates by the clinic.
