Alex announcer's charity football match raises thousands of pounds for The Christie

By Gwyn Griffiths 27th Aug 2021

A CHARITY football match organised by Crewe Alex stadium announcer Andy Scoffin has already raised more than £4,500 for The Christie.

The Gresty Road fundraiser, played behind-closed-doors on Sunday evening, featured teams split into those donning home and away Crewe Alex kits. Players paid up to £25 each to play in teams captained by Andy's sons, Ashley and Warren.

Lifelong Alex fan Andy is fighting cancer for the second time in eleven years. He was a patient at The Christie for several months in 2009/10 and has returned for treatment in recent times.

The Christie is one of the largest cancer treatment centres in Europe and an international leader in research.

Andy kicked off the action and after a tightly-fought game it was the Alex away shirted team that emerged victorious by a 4-0 margin with the goals coming from Ben Gilbert, Matt Johnson, Gavin McKeith and James Dodd.

Andy said afterwards: "A big thank you to Crewe Alexandra for their support and use of the pitch, many Crewe fans realised a longstanding dream by playing on the Gresty Road pitch. Thank you to all the many donators - both players and non players."
