RESIDENTS in Wistaston have been left reeling from the smell of polluting waste after a storm drain became blocked.

The drain at Wistaston Brook, next to Joey the Swan, is bunged up with toilet waste, wet wipes, nappies and sanitary products.

They have become lodged in its safety grill while debri has also become trapped further downstream in sections of the banks of the brook.

Residents say an "abhorrent stench is emanating" from the drain, which may be swamped due to the large quantity of rain that has fallen during the storms of recent weeks.

Among the comments on social media have been "absolutely disgusting", "omg that is vile" and "the brook is a lifeless stretch of water with little wildlife.....no bloody wonder".

The discharges are not being linked to the building of the 300-home Wistaston Brook estate by Bloor Homes nearby.

Joey the Swan has been enjoyed for generations by children and adults who use the area for exercise and for walking dogs, which frequently enter the brook.

United Utilities and the Environment Agency have both been told about the problem.
