Back in November Nub News reported that a 73-home 'affordable' housing scheme on the former LMR football site had been given approval.

Cheshire East Council gave the green light to the Guinness Partnership scheme on Goddard Street, ordering that they pay £80,000 in compensation for the loss of the pitch.

Within the past week, work has started on clearing the field.

The tall trees that once prevented footballs flying over the gates onto the Goddard Street cobblestone road, have now been removed.

Overgrown grass across the old pitch has now been trimmed to a normal length, diggers have cleared debris lying across the site along with more trees and hedges.

Once complete, the land will consist of 42 'independent living' apartments and 31 houses.

Alan Hardern from Crewe was unhappy with the scheme, stating on social media: "It should have been left as a football stadium with money from Cheshire East Council. All they're concerned about is building houses."

The LMR (London Midland Region) established in 1948, was one of the six regions created on the formation of British Railways, it was wound up at the end of 1992.

The Goddard Street club which was constructed in 1908, finally closed in 2009. The pitch has been left untouched since.
