A COVID-19 survivor has raised over £1,200 for Leighton Hospital as a thanks to the medics that "saved her life".

Gill Bennett completed a track day in her wheelchair at Oulton Park, initially setting out to hit a £500 target. But her 'Gilly-Athlon' last August, in which the 80-year-old completed 10 miles around the race circuit in her battery powered wheelchair, raised more than double that.

Gill was admitted to Leighton after her temperature soared to 40 degrees and after testing positive for the virus her condition deteriorated.

But she mounted a recovery and after almost four weeks was well enough to be discharged back to her Nantwich home.

Gill said: "I wanted to say a huge thank you to all the NHS staff for the amazing job they continue to do every day in this global fight against the virus.

"I thoroughly enjoyed the day at Oulton Park, it was tiring but I managed to cover just over the 10 miles in my battery-powered wheelchair.

"I also want to personally thank everyone who kindly donated to such a wonderful cause."

Gill's cash has gone to the Mid Cheshire Hospitals Charity's staff wellbeing appeal and the charity's fundraiser Carole Salmon said: "Gill's story is truly inspirational. Watching her cross the finish line at Oulton Park really was awesome to see. We would like to thank her and her family for all their support."
