Game changer for students as Cheshire College launches unique Esports course

COMPUTER game enthusiasts are being offered the chance to turn their hobby into a career at Cheshire College.

A new Esports course, designed to support progression into employment in one of the world's fastest growing industries, starts at the college's Crewe and Chester campuses in September this year.

Esports (Electronic Sports) is the collective term used to describe competitive gaming at a professional level, with the top e-sports players often being the very best in the world at their respective game.

The College's new two-year, full-time course will provide an in-depth study of the sector.

Esports learners will develop a range of key skills including, teamwork, communication, leadership skills, confidence building, decision making, reaction times, reading comprehension skills, cyber skills, dexterity and concentration.

Phil Farrington, Assistant Director – Visual and Performing Arts, said: "We're extremely excited to be one of the only colleges in Cheshire offering an Esports course, which is already proving extremely popular with both current and prospective learners.

"During the two-year duration of the course, learners will have the opportunity to study in industry-standard environments and develop a sound understanding of the gaming industry, while forming a competitive Esports team, with entry into national competitions."

In 2016, the global video game market was valued at £113 billion and by 2027, the industry is expected to have a revenue forecast of £219 billion.

This expected growth within just a decade means that the sector is set to become one of the fastest growing in the world and tutors hope Cheshire College Esports learners will advance to become players, team coaches, shoutcasters and presenters, social media influencers, video production editors and data analysts.
