RESIDENTS were evacuated from a Crewe home after a fire broke out in a cellar space.

When fire crews arrived at the house in Middlewich Street they found a large amount smoke billowing from the basement which was caused by a consignment of "smouldering" cigarettes.

Three fire crews from Crewe and Nantwich were called out at 6.30pm last night when all the occupants of the property were evacuated.

Firefighters used a hose reel jet to extinguish the cigarettes and then deployed a large fan to clear the smoke.

The crews at the scene for around one hour and 15 minutes.
