Covid-19 map shows 35 people died from virus in Crewe during January

THERE were 35 deaths attributed to coronavirus in Crewe during January, new government figures reveal.

As the virus' toll mounted last month following rising infection rates at the end of last year and the start of this, areas of the town and surrounding area were hit differently as is shown by an interactive map published by the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

The figures are compiled from post code data, with the area of Crewe registering the most Covid-related deaths in January being Crewe south west and Wistaston.

Sadly there were seven deaths in total, which took the area's tally to 14 since last March at the start of the pandemic.

There were six deaths in Crewe north east, with the area registering 26 since March 2020.

Overall, the area's worst hit area since the pandemic began is Haslington and Weston where 30 people have sadly passed away with the virus; three of whom died during January.

Around neighbouring towns, deaths from Covid numbered seven in Nantwich and its outlying areas and 54 since the pandemic began. While in Sandbach, 11 people passed away after contracting Covid during January, with the figure since last March totalling 44.

The ONS stresses that as local data is only available up to January, the numbers of deaths do not reflect the latest trends, which have seen rolling rates of infection fall significantly in recent weeks.

In Cheshire East the figure was down to 103.0 per 100,000 population by last weekend.

Today (Thursday) 65 people tested positive for Covid-19 in Cheshire East and the 358 positive cases over the last week is a fall of 22 per cent on the previous seven days.

Hospital admissions have fallen, but are still high relative to the first wave. There were 98 patients being treated for coronavirus at Leighton Hospital last week (February 16) and 49 patients were admitted between February 7 and 14, but that was a fall of 21 per cent on the previous seven days.
